12 March 2025 IBM i Security Alert: Ethernet recovery for certain IBM i adapters (12/03/2025)

🔴An error condition has been identified affecting IBM i operating systems versions 7.4.0 and 7.5.0 when using the following Ethernet adapters (CCINs): 2F04, 2CEC, 2CF3, 2CFA, 2CFB, 2CF9, 58FB, 58FA and EC2A.

📌Problem details
When a recovery operation is required on these adapters, it causes them to go into a failed state. Once in this state, the only way to restore their operation is to run the following command:
VRYCFG CFGOBJ(LINE_NAME) CFGTYPE(LIN) STATUS(ON) RESET(*YES)
⚠️ Warning: this vary on operation will affect all adapter ports, causing an interruption in service.⚠️

💡Recommended solution

To avoid this error condition, we recommend applying the corresponding corrective PTFs to the Ethernet adapters concerned.

These patches require the system to be updated at the following levels:

  • IBM i 7.4.0 – TR11
  • IBM i 7.5.0 – TR5
Then, the following HIPER PTFs must be applied immediately:
  • IBM i 7.4: MJ01878 and MJ02011
  • IBM i 7.5 : MJ02009 and MJ02010
If the adapters are already in a failed state, it will be necessary to execute a vary on command with reset after applying the PTFs to restore their operation.

Applying the recommended patches is essential to ensure the stability of Ethernet adapters affected by this error. We strongly recommend that you carry out these updates as soon as possible, to avoid any unexpected interruption of network services.
